International Schools Services:
Moving a family overseas is exciting but can be fraught with challenges. Probably the most anxiety provoking is finding the right school for the kids. Each of your children has different needs. One may be in the last years of high school, one may have learning differences, and one may be extremely gifted and hungry for a bigger challenge. And on top of all of this, your children are becoming Third Culture Kids, which adds an additional layer of complexity to the equation.
The key is to “know before you go,” especially if you have a child with learning disabilities. Rebecca Grappo has years of experience helping families make informed decisions regarding their children’s education both at home and abroad.
It is especially critical for parents of children with learning differences to be aware of the difficulty of finding appropriate support services for students overseas. This becomes increasingly difficult as they get older. There are some circumstances in which a student's needs are better served in a supportive boarding school environment. Rebecca has written articles about taking a child with learning differences overseas. One in particular is now part of the training materials used by the U.S. Department of State for diplomatic families with special needs children.
Before you go overseas, ask yourself these important questions:
- What are the admissions criteria?
- Will my child be accepted?
- Is there a place for my child at the school of choice or is there a waiting list?
- Is there a choice of schools or is there only one option in the area?
- Is there an appropriate peer group for my child/children and are there extra-curricular activities?
- How big is the school?
- Will my child be able to graduate and have the academic opportunities they need to be ready for the college admissions process?
- Will my child's learning needs be met in this environment?
